Great West Volleyball Tournament Begins Friday in Chicago

The Great West Conference Volleyball Tournament begins Friday at Chicago, Ill. Chicago State will host the seven-team tournament with first serve set for 2 p.m. (CT).
The tournament's opening match will be an all-Texas affair as No. 4 seed Houston Baptist will match up against fifth-seeded Texas-Pan American. The Huskies come into the tournament with a 17-12 overall record while finishing with a 7-5 Great West record. The Broncs enter the weekend with an 8-21 record and finished the conference slate with a 4-8 mark. HBU is led by reigning GWC Players of the Week Isis Gardner and GWC digs leader Courtney Whittleman, while Marci Logan and Rita Gonzalez lead the Broncs in their bid for a tournament championship.
The second match will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will feature the Coyotes of South Dakota (12-18, 8-4 GWC) as the No. 3 seed versus NJIT (5-19, 2-10 GWC). USD is led offensively by Kristin Kritenbrink, while Carol Logato anchors the Coyote defense. Outside hitter Baaba Hughes and setter Anna Mercado team up to lead the Highlanders offensively.
The final match on Friday will pit host Chicago State (0-32, 0-12 GWC) against the second-seeded Wolverines from Utah Valley (20-10, 9-3 GWC). The Cougars are led by two freshmen, outside hitter Valeria Desiderio and libero Mysta Townsell. UVU is led by 2009 GWC Player of the Year Kayli Broadbent Doxey, while the Wolverines also boast the GWC total blocks leader Dani Robison.
Great West champion North Dakota (23-5, 12-0 GWC) will have a bye on Friday and will open its bid for a repeat tournament championship against the winner of HBU/UTPA at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Sioux have a powerful offensive trio in Erin Joki, Annika Smed and Devin Trefz, who have been set all season by standout freshman Ellen Krueger.
The 2010 GWC tournament champion will be crowned on Sunday afternoon with the championship match scheduled for 12 noon (CT).
