FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - North Dakota defeated South Dakota in a pair of one-run games by the scores of 4-3, 3-2, while Houston Baptist won the first game against Utah Valley, 2-1, but UVU won the second game, 4-2, to split Friday's doubleheader as each of the four teams opened Great West Conference play in Farmers Branch, Texas.

Game 1 - Houston Baptist 2, Utah Valley 1

In Game 1, the Wolverines, thanks to a solo homer by Amanda Robinson in the top of the fourth, led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. However, the Huskies rallied and scored two runs (one earned) to pull out the one-run victory.

UVU's Kyli Flanary (0-5) allowed just four hits and struck out three without walking a batter in suffering the tough loss.

HBU's Jammie Weidert (6-4) struck out 12 batters in seven complete innings to earn the victory for the Huskies.

Game 2 - Utah Valley 4, Houston Baptist 2

Utah Valley (3-13, 1-1) came back from a two-run deficit in the second game of the doubleheader against Houston Baptist to post a 4-2 win to earn the split with the Huskies.

After the Huskies (17-14, 1-1) scored two runs in top of the third inning, the Wolverines answered back with two in the bottom of the frame.

Korryn Coates and Megan Yocom singled before Amanda Robinson drove them home with a two-run double to tie the score.

Two innings later, Amanda Perez belted a solo homer to give the Wolverines the lead for good. For good measure, Yocom, who led the Wolverines with three hits, had an RBI triple in the sixth.

Game 1 - North Dakota 4, South Dakota 3

The Coyotes struck right away in the first inning. Hall singled and moved to third when senior Mel Johnson doubled. Alexa Rudeen reached on an error, allowing Stephanie Hall to score. The Coyotes managed only the one run in the inning despite leaving the bases loaded.

North Dakota came back to take a 2-1 lead, but the Coyotes tied the game in the fifth. Boyd singled and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hall. One out later, Rudeen singled up the middle to score Boyd, tying the game at 2-all.

North Dakota scored twice in the top of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. The Coyotes attempted to rally with a run in the bottom of the seventh but that is all they could muster as UND's Emma Gronseth earned her first save of the season.

Game 2 - North Dakota 3, South Dakota 2

North Dakota (8-17, 2-0 GWC) scored three times in the bottom of the first, using three walks, two hits and a Coyote error to build an early 3-0 lead.

The Coyotes chipped away at the lead. With two out in the fourth, Rudeen hit her first homer of the season to cut the lead to 3-1. In the sixth, Boyd walked to lead off the inning and stole second. Hall singled but Boyd was thrown out trying to score on the play. Hall moved to second, and one out later, moved to third on a single by Rudeen. Christine Broders singled to score Hall, bringing the Coyotes within 3-2. South Dakota would leave two runners on in the inning, however.

In the seventh, the Coyotes (9-14, 0-2) had the tying run on base but were unable to score.

In tomorrow's action, Houston Baptist will face North Dakota in a doubleheader with game one starting at 1 p.m. (CT) while South Dakota squares off against Utah Valley at 1 p.m. (CT).
