North Dakota Upsets Top-Seed NJIT in Great West Soccer Tournament

NEWARK, N.J. - North Dakota, the fourth-seeded team in the West Division, upset the East's top-seeded NJIT, 3-1, in the final quarterfinal match of the Great West Conference Tournament at Newark, N.J. After a scoreless first half, UND's Sarah Penner scored the Sioux's first goal at the 50:31 mark, giving North Dakota a 1-0 lead. The Highlanders quickly answered at 55:10 on a penalty kick by Michelle Borth. The match remained tied until UND's All-Conference forward Rachael Loomis scored off an assist by Veronika Zischka in the 72nd minute to give the Sioux a 2-1 lead. Loomis struck again with a goal off an Ericka Lund throw in at the 88:07 mark to upset the Highlanders, 3-1. The Sioux (3-13-2) edged NJIT (7-9-2) in shots 8-7 and corner kicks were tied 1-1. NJIT goalkeeper Lauren Sera posted one save which East Defensive Player of the Year, Sadie Mele, recorded two saves in the losing effort. North Dakota will face Houston Baptist in Saturday's second semifinal at 7:30 p.m. ET.
