Howard Defeats South Dakota in GWC Tournament Opening Match

NEWARK, N.J. -

In the opening game of the Great West Conference Soccer Tournament, Howard University defeated The University of South Dakota, 2-0. 

East Offensive Player of the Year Retha Koefoed scored both goals for the Bison at Newark, N.J. 

Koefoed's first goal came on a penalty kick at 49:02, followed by her second goal at 84:29 on an assist by Cynthia Cross.

The Bison, the number two seed in the East, outshot the Coyotes, 30-14, and had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Howard goalkeeper Chanel Bell, an at-large selection to the All-Conference team, tallied seven saves, while Jennifer Ogren had 10 saves in the losing effort for the Coyotes (4-12-1; third seed in the West).

The Bison improve to 5-10-2 on the season and will face the winner of Utah Valley and Delaware State at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday.
