Utah Valley Gets Upset Win in Great West Conference Tournament
March 11, 2010 OREM, Utah - Utah Valley 76, Chicago State 61 Asumi Nakayama scored a career-high 26 points and dished out seven assists to lead No. 6 seed Utah Valley to a 76-61 victory over third-seeded Chicago State in the first round of the Great West Conference Basketball Tournament at Orem, Utah. Utah Valley took a 37-34 lead into the locker room at the half and steadily built its lead throughout the second frame. For the game, UVU shot 50 percent (21-42) for the game compared to 42 percent (27-65) for the Cougars. UVU connected on 47 percent (8-17) from beyond the arc and held Chicago State to 14 percent on 2-14 shooting. From the charity stripe, the Wolverines were 26-32 for 81 percent and CSU hit 5-10 for 50 percent. "The way that Asumi just ran the team on both ends of the court was just awesome," said UVU coach Cathy Nixon. "Im really proud of our kids. I feel like we've been preparing and building to this. It's huge for us to come in as the sixth seed and to be able to put together a game against a very good Chicago State team."Joining Nakayama in double figures was Jenna Johnson with 21. Erika Newbold and Kaycee Mansfield led the Wolverines on the boards with eight rebounds apiece. Courtney Waldon led the Cougars (12-19) with 14 points, Laureen Pierson contributed 12 points and Janay Dockery added 10. Caila Desroches pulled down eight rebounds in the losing effort. Utah Valley (8-22) will play Texas-Pan American in Friday's semifinals.
