Texas-Pan American Wins GWC Tournament First-Round Game
March 11, 2010 OREM, Utah - Texas Pan American 69, Houston Baptist 61 Sherrell Davis scored 21 points and GWC Defensive Player of the Year Rose Esther Jean posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead Texas-Pan American over Houston Baptist in the first round of the Great West Conference Basketball Tournament at Orem, Utah. The Lady Broncs enjoyed a 13-point lead, 28-15, with 5:57 remaining before HBU was able to cut the lead to seven, 35-28, entering the break. In the second stanza, UTPA increased its lead back to 10, 46-36, before the Huskies used a 10-1 run to cut the lead to a single point at the 11:10 mark. HBU would get within one on six occasions in the second frame but couldn't overtake the Lady Broncs (13-16). "Tonight's win means that we are in the semifinals and one win away from tying the school's best record in the history of the program," said UTPA coach Denny Downing. ""That is what happens this time of year. You push these kids and she (Davis) stepped up today. It was a tremendous day for her on a day when we needed her."Joining Davis and Jean in double figures for UTPA were second-team all-conference selection Aleeya Grigsby with 16 points and nine boards and GWC Newcomer of the Year and second-team all-GWC Bianca Torre with 12. HBU (3-25) was led by Jamie Spriggs with 19 points and eight rebounds. The Lady Broncs will play the winner of the Chicago State-Utah Valley game in the semifinals on Friday.
