SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Nov. 24) - Cal Poly linebacker Jordan Beck and Northern Colorado wide receiver Vincent Jackson earned top honors as the inaugural All-Great West Football Conference honors were announced Wednesday.
Selected by the conference¹s six head coaches, Beck was named Great West Defensive Player of the year while Jackson earned Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Beck broke Cal Poly¹s single-season record for tackles with 135 and the career mark which now stands at 446. The two-time Buck Buchanan Award finalist is No. 1 in NCAA Division I-AA with 8.82 solo tackles a game and .55 forced fumbles a contest as he led the Mustangs to a 9-2 record and the Great West Football Conference championship.
Jackson caught 80 passes for 1,382 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Bears, leading the conference in nearly all receiving categories. The Walter Payton Award finalist averaged 17.3 yards per catch, 125.6 receiving yards (No. 3) per game and 7.27 catches (No. 6) a contest.
Other specialty awards went to UC Davis wide receiver/return specialist Jesse Oliva as Special Teams Player of the Year, Southern Utah wide receiver Braden Godfrey as Freshman of the Year and Rich Ellerson of Cal Poly as Coach of the Year.
Oliva averaged 22.0 yards per punt return for the Aggies and scored a pair of touchdowns. Godfrey caught 13 passes for 198 yards and one touchdown for the Thunderbirds. Ellerson guided the Mustangs to their second straight winning season and Cal Poly has won 17 of its last 23 games under Ellerson, who has a 25-19 mark in four seasons with the Mustangs.
The first and second teams include 12 players from Southern Utah, 11 from Cal Poly and 10 each from North Dakota State and UC Davis.
