Aug. 24, 2010
Three Great West Conference football players have been named NCAA Division I FCS Preseason All-America by College Sporting News. SUU's Tysson Poots and Fesi Sitake, along with Cal Poly's Dominique Johnson, received the CSN preseason honor announced Monday. Poots, a senior from Las Vegas, Nev., was a first-team selection at wide receiver. In addition to the College Sporting News preseason accolade, he has also received preseason All-America honors from The Sports Network and is on the Walter Payton Award watch list. The GWC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year is a two-time All-Great West Conference and All-America selection and is the leading returning FCS receiver in the country in yards per game (120.1), receptions per game (9.4) and scoring (10.0 points) after he finished second in those three categories last year. A senior wide receiver from Sandy, Utah, Sitake was named to the second team as a punt returner. He led the Great West in that category last season with 14.79 yards per return, good for seventh in the FCS and received the same All-America recognition from The Sports Network last month. Sitake received second-team All-GWC accolades in 2009 and his yards per return average ranks second among FCS returners this season and is sixth best in SUU history. Johnson, a 2009 All-GWC selection, earned second-team honors at wide receiver on the College Sporting News preseason team. The senior from Moreno Valley, Calif., also has received additional national preseason honors, including College Football Performance Awards 2010 Football Championship Subdivision Preseason Watch List and third-team Phil Steele's 2010 Preseason FCS All-America. Johnson was Cal Poly's leading receiver in 2009 with 43 catches for 741 yards and six touchdowns despite suffering early season injuries. He posted a career-best 13 receptions for 273 yards and a school-record five touchdowns versus South Dakota after transferring from UCLA prior to his junior season. All 14 Conferences and the Independents group, 58 Schools and 99 players received the 2010 preseason honors from College Sporting News. |
