SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Redshirt freshman quarterback Ernie Cooper hit Sean Kennedy, another redshirt freshman, with a 33-yard touchdown pass to highlight the 2005 Cal Poly Football Spring Game held Saturday in Mustang Stadium.

Anthony Garnett, Frederick Hives II and Adam George all scored touchdowns on runs as the Mustang offense, dressed in white jerseys, scored four times and accumulated 14 first downs against the Mustang defense, dressed in green jerseys.

Four Mustang quarterbacks completed just five of 29 passes for 111 yards with three interceptions. Former quarterback Cordel Webb, now playing in the defensive secondary, picked off two passes and Kenny Chicoine had the other.

Hives led a Mustang running attack that netted 181 yards on 55 carries. Hives finished with 48 yards on 12 carries while Josiah Jennings and Cooper each gained 32 yards.

"This game was a chance for a lot of guys who haven't played before -- the redshirts and walk-ons -- a chance to play," said fifth-year Mustang head coach Rich Ellerson. "That's what spring ball is about -- a chance for those guys to get a chance to play."

Garnett scored on a two-yard run and completed two of 10 passes for 64 yards. Hives scored on a three-yard run and Adam George ran eight yards for the third score of the game.

Mende was one of eight for six yards while Cooper finished two of eight for 41 yards. Matt Brennan connected on none of his three attempts.

Kennedy was Cal Poly's top receiver with two catches for 41 yards. Phil Skinner, Tre'Dale Tolver and Jonah Russell each caught a pass.

Defensive leaders for the Mustangs were linebacker Kyle Shotwell with seven tackles, linebacker Dustin Baxley with six tackles and cornerback Michael Maye with three pass breakups.
