Great West Teams Busy on NLI Signing Date

Elmhurst, Ill. - Tho top-rated Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) conference had a busy day Wednesday as 82 high school and junior college players signed National Letter of Intents on the first day of the annual winter football signing period, the league office released ed today.

Defending Great West champion North Dakota State (10-1, 4-0), which finished the season ranked anywhere from 4th to 5th in the final FCS polls, signed 17 on the first day, all of them from the high school ranks. The 2006 runner-up, South Dakota State, also penned 17 on the first day. The Jackrabbits finished the 2006 season with a 7-4 record and ranked in the Top 25 for the first time in school history. Cal Poly, which was 7-4 in 2006 and ranked between 14th and 16th in the final polls, signed 13 and all come from the state of California, including Troy Shotwell, brother of Buchanan Award winner Kyle Shotwell. UC Davis, which has completed its reclassification period and will be eligible for the FCS playoffs in 2007, had 13 signees as it attempts to stretch its consecutive seasons with a winning record to 38 years. Southern Utah had the busiest day as the Thunderbirds signed 22 athletes, including 12 prep players from the state of Utah.
