Cal Poly Announces Class of a Dozen Football Recruits

Cal Poly head coach Rich Ellerson signed 12 players on Wednesday's National Signing Day.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - A dozen football players, including a pair from nearby Arroyo Grande High School, have signed national letters of intent to play at Cal Poly. The announcement was made today by Mustang football coach Rich Ellerson and Cal Poly director of athletics Alison Cone.

The Regular Signing Period opened today and ends April 1.

The 12 new recruits (alphabetically):

Alex Bynum, FB/LB, 6-2, 230, San Jose, CA (Leland HS)
Bynum excelled as a linebacker last fall at Leland High School, recording 90 solo tackles and 46 assists with three sacks. He also played on offense, carrying the ball 30 times for 213 yards and also catching three passes for 36 yards, scoring two touchdowns. As a senior Bynum earned first-team All-Blossom Valley Athletic League honors and was named most outstanding defensive back of the league. He also was named team MVP and All-CIF-Central Coast Section honorable mention, was team captain and was the leading tackler in the Central Coast Section in 2004. As a junior Bynum earned second-team all-league honors and was named junior of the year in the Blossom Valley Athletic League. He was on the school¹s Honor Roll all four years.

David Fullerton, WR/DB, 5-11, 180, Brea, CA (Brea Olinda HS)
Fullerton was a wide receiver, defensive back and punter at Brea Olinda High School last fall. He caught 20 passes for 503 yards and seven touchdowns, recorded 79 tackles and 10 pass deflections with four forced fumbles on defense, and averaged 47 yards as a punter. He also runs track and has best times of 10.8 seconds in the 100 meters and 22.3 in the 200. In football, Fullerton has earned a pair of All-Century League first-team honors and was defensive player of the year as a junior. A three-year varsity letterman, Fullerton was team captain and team MVP as a senior and was honored as a scholar-athlete by the Orange County chapter of the National Football Foundation. The Wildcats were 5-6 last fall but qualified for the CIF-Southern Section Division VI playoffs. He was a CIF-Southern Section finalist in the 200 last spring.

Xavier Gardner, WR/DB, 6-0, 170, Aliso Viejo, CA (Aliso Niguel HS)
Gardner caught 45 passes for 775 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior last fall at Aliso Niguel High School. He also intercepted six passes, returning them 175 yards and scoring once. Gardner also was credited with 30 tackles and four pass breakups. As a junior he caught 20 passes for 180 yards along with two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. Gardner also had 22 tackles and seven breakups. He has played football for only two years but earned first-team all-league honors both years and also was All-CIF-Southern Section as a senior. He earned team most improved honors as a junior and the coach¹s award as a senior. Gardner also plays basketball, earning all-league honorable mention and team MVP honors as a sophomore.

Carlton Gillespie, DL, 6-1, 240, Oxnard, CA (St. Bonaventure HS)
Gillespie was a terror in the opponents¹ offensive backfield, recording 19 sacks and 83 total tackles as a senior and nine more sacks as a junior at St. Bonaventure High School. Gillespie helped the Seraphs to a 13-1 record, a Channel League title and the CIF-Southern Section Division IV championship. As a senior, Gillespie earned first-team All-Channel League, All-CIF-Southern Section Division IV, All-Los Angeles Times Southern California and All-Ventura County. He was named lineman of the year in Ventura County. The Seraphs were 39-3 in Gillespie¹s three varsity seasons. Gillespie enters the spring track and field season ranked No. 2 in the state in the discus.

Jon Hall, TE/DE, 6-3, 240, Thousand Oaks, CA (Thousand Oaks HS)
Hall caught 73 passes for 1,169 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior at Thousand Oaks High School, leading the Lancers to an 8-4 record and the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division IV playoffs. He caught one pass for a 97-yard touchdown, longest in school history, and broke the school record for receiving yards in a season. Hall earned All-Marmonte League, All-Ventura County and All-CIF-Southern Section honors and was named big schools receiver of the year in Ventura County. He has been invited to the Shrine All-Star Game.

Matt Hill, DB, 6-1, 190, Fresno, CA (Clovis West HS)
Hill intercepted a pair of passes, broke up 10 other pass plays and recorded 95 tackles to help Clovis West High School to the CIF-Central Valley Section championship and a No. 5 state ranking. The Golden Eagles were 12-2 and won the Tri-River Athletic Conference title in 2004. A three-year varsity starter, Hill was team captain in 2004 and earned first-team All-Tri-River Athletic Conference and All-City honors as well as second-team All-CIF-Central Valley Section honors. He also was second-team All-Tri-River Athletic Conference as a junior.

Sean Lawyer, OL/DL, 6-1, 270, San Jose, CA (Oak Grove HS)
Lawyer was named Senior of the Year in the Blossom Valley League Athletic after an outstanding senior season at Oak Grove High School, leading the Eagles to an 11-2 overall record, Blossom Valley Athletic League title and CIF-Central Coast Section Large Schools Division championship. Lawyer recorded 42 tackles, including 31 solo stops, and two sacks with one fumble recovery. He was team captain, first-team all-league and first-team All-San Jose Mercury News. Lawyer also plays basketball and is the team captain this season.

Ian Masterson, LB, 6-0, 215, Escondido, CA (San Pasqual HS)
Masterson is No. 4 in career tackles with 284 and No. 9 in career sacks with 19 at San Pasqual High School. As a senior he notched 74 tackles, including three sacks, and also recorded four quarterback hurries and three fumble recoveries, leading the Golden Eagles to an 8-3-1 record and the second round of the CIF-San Diego Section Division II playoffs. Masterson earned All-Valley League, All-CIF-San Diego Section and All-City honors. He also was first-team all-league as a junior and second-team all-league as a sophomore. A three-year football varsity letterman, Masterson also excels in track and was a finalist in the state 4-by-100 relay. He is a four-time Honor Roll member with a 4.0 GPA and a member of both the National Honor Society and California Scholastic Federation.

Tom Pace, TE/SS, 6-2, 215, Arroyo Grande, CA (Arroyo Grande HS)
Pace was a defensive back and punter last fall at Arroyo Grande High School, helping the Eagles to an 8-3 record, a Pac-5 League title and a berth in the CIF-Southern Section Division IV playoffs. Pace logged 76 total tackles, including 59 solo stops, and intercepted a pair of passes. As a punter, Pace averaged 43 yards per kick. He earned All-Pac-5 League, All-San Luis Obispo County and All-CIF-Southern Section Division IV honors as a senior.

Danny Rohr, TE/LB, 6-1, 220, Grover Beach, CA (Arroyo Grande HS)
Rohr recorded 201 tackles in two seasons at Arroyo Grande High School, helping the Eagles to an 8-3 record, a Pac-5 League title and a berth in the CIF-Southern Section Division IV playoffs in 2004. Rohr had 115 tackles, including 81 solo stops, as a senior in addition to forcing three fumbles, recovering two and collecting three sacks. He was named Defensive Back of the Year in the Pac-5 League and earned third-team all-state honors and was a first-team All-Pac-5, All-San Luis Obispo County, All-Area and All-CIF-Southern Section Division IV selection. As a junior, Rohr earned all-league and all-county honors. He was third in the nation as a junior in the shot put with a mark of 63 feet, 4 inches.

Ryan Shotwell, TE/DE, 6-3, 220, Goleta, CA (Dos Pueblos HS)
Shotwell recorded 81 tackles, including 40 solo stops and nine sacks, as a senior at Dos Pueblos High School. He also recovered a fumble and, on offense, caught 27 passes for 474 yards and two scores and also rushed seven times for 82 yards and a score. Shotwell twice earned first-team All-Channel League honors as a defensive end. As a junior, Shotwell also earned All-CIF-Southern Section honors and was named team MVP, leading the Chargers into the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. Shotwell¹s older brother, Kyle Shotwell, will be a junior linebacker at Cal Poly next season.

Jeremy Sutherland, OL/DL, 6-2, 245, Palm Springs, CA (Palm Springs HS)
Sutherland notched 60 tackles as a defensive end, 45 of them solo, as a senior at Palm Springs High School, leading the Indians to a 12-2 record, a Desert Valley League championship and a runner-up finish in the CIF-Southern Section Division VIII playoffs. Sutherland, who also had seven sacks, twice earned All-Desert Valley League honors and as a senior also was a first-team All-Los Angeles Times, All-Inland Empire and All-CIF-Southern Section (both Division VIII and overall) selection. He also was team MVP in 2004 and has been selected to play in the Shrine All-Star Game.
