BROOKINGS, S.D. - Nineteen high school seniors have signed letters of intent, indicating they will enroll at South Dakota State University and participate in the Jackrabbit football program.

The 2005 SDSU recruiting class includes ten defensive players and nine on offense. There are four linebackers, four offensive linemen, three defensive backs, three defensive linemen, two running backs, and one each at quarterback, tight end and wide receiver.

SDSU, coached by John Stiegelmeier, completed its first season in NCAA Division IAA football last fall as the institution goes through its transition period from NCAA Division II. The Jacks are a member of the Great West Football Conference.

"This recruiting class completes back-to-back excellent classes at the IAA level," Stiegelmeier said. "It fills all the needs we will have in the next two years with talent needed to compete at the IAA level.

"As always, we start with the offensive and defensive lines signing seven linemen. While strengthening the lines, we also signed at least one athlete at each of seven other positions.

"Finally, the term student-athlete is defined by the fact that this group averaged 23 on the ACT and has an average grade point average of 3.36," Stiegelmeier said.
