Cal Poly Drops Battle of Top 6 Teams, 10-9

Missoula, Mont. - Dan Carpenter's 21-yard field goal with five seconds remaining lifted No. 2 Montana to a 10-9 non-conference victory over No. 6 Cal Poly in a non-conference NCAA Division I-AA football game Saturday afternoon before 22,853 in Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

Montana drove 76 yards in 16 plays to set up the winning field goal, improving to 8-1 on the season. Cal Poly, which fell to 6-3, was held out of the endzone, settling for three Nick Coromelas field goals spanning 35, 30 and 47 yards.

The first two in the second quarter gave the Mustangs a 6-0 halftime lead and his third kick gave the Mustangs a 9-7 lead with 3:56 to play.

Mustang sophomore quarterback Matt Brennan completed 14 of 27 passes for 207 yards and his favorite target was Ramses Barden with six catches for 123 yards. Tredale Tolver added four receptions for 22 yards.

Running back James Noble gained 61 tough yards on 23 carries.

Montana quarterback Josh Swagger completed 12 of 30 passes for 161 yards and the game's only touchdown -- a 27-yarder to Ryan Bagley on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Cal Poly held Montana to 90 yards rushing.

Montana had a 15-12 edge in first downs but Cal Poly compiled a 292-290 advantage in total yards. Time of possession favored the Grizzlies by just 48 seconds.

Cal Poly's second three-game road trip of the season ends next Saturday at North Dakota State. Kickoff for the Great West Football Conference contest in the Fargodome at Fargo, N.D., is set for 1 p.m.
