UC Davis Rallies for Late Score, Victory Over Cal Poly, 36-33

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Jon Grant hit Tony Kays with a 14-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds to play, lifting UC Davis to a 36-33 victory over Cal Poly in a Great West Football Conference game before a record crowd of 9,387 in Mustang Stadium.

Trailing 33-28, the Aggies drove 53 yards in just four plays for the winning score. Daniel Fells caught a two-point conversion pass from Grant to account for the final points of the game.

Cal Poly, ranked fifth in NCAA Division I-AA, overcame a 21-7 halftime deficit, but couldn't hold onto 24-21 and 33-28 leads, suffering its first loss of the season after opening the season with seven straight wins.

The Mustangs fall to 7-1 on the year while UC Davis improves to 6-2. Both teams are 3-1 in Great West contests. The visiting team has won the last five games in the series, with UC Davis now owning a 15-13-2 advantage in the series dating back to the first contest in 1939.

Grant completed 21 of 40 passes for 393 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing 17 times for 53 yards for the Aggies. Kays and Kevin Freeman each caught six passes for UC Davis and Fells added five.

Mustang junior quarterback Anthony Garnett connected on 21 of 34 passes for 377 yards and threw four touchdown passes for the second time in three weeks. Darrell Jones caught seven passes for 168 yards and one score while Jason Holmes had six catches for 51 yards and two touchdowns. Jonah Russell added five catches for 120 yards and a score.

UC Davis had a 23-17 advantage in first downs while Cal Poly amassed a 494-477 edge in total offense.

UC Davis built its 21-7 lead on a 70-yard pass from Grant to Jesse Oliva, a three-yard run by Nelson Doris and a 10-yard run by Grant.

Cal Poly, which scored its lone first-half touchdown on a 79-yard pass from Garnett to Jones in the first quarter, outscored the Aggies 26-7 in the first 25 minutes of the second half.

Garnett hit Holmes with a seven-yard scoring pass, a 70-yarder to Russell and a four-yarder to Holmes while Byungwoo Yoon added field goals spanning 42 and 23 yards as the Mustangs built a 33-28 lead with 5:26 to play.

Defensive leaders for UC Davis were Ryan Sharp and Pila Fatukala, each with nine tackles. Ben Reece had eight tackles, including three for lost yardage, and Dan Elbanna also recorded eight stops.

Cal Poly linebacker Jordan Beck notched 16 tackles and two pass breakups while lineman Chris Gocong added nine tackles, including 2.5 sacks.

Cal Poly plays at Eastern Washington next Saturday while UC Davis has a bye.
