Cal Poly Nets 42-7 Victory Over Humboldt State
Sept. 5, 2004 SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Junior quarterback John Mende passed for 169 yards and two touchdowns to lead Cal Poly to a 42-7 victory over Humboldt State in a non-conference football game Saturday night before 6,833 in Mustang Stadium. Mende completed five of nine passes, including a 24-yard scoring pass to Anthony Randolph in the first quarter and an 84-yard pass to Darrell Jones in the second period. Sophomore quarterback Cordel Webb, a transfer from Saint Mary's, connected on five of eight passes for 57 yards and a score -- a seven-yard pass to Randolph in the third quarter. Senior running back Geno Randle notched his third career 100-yard game on the ground, rushing for 106 yards on just eight carries. One of his runs was for 53 yards and a touchdown 22 seconds into the third quarter. Fullback Adam George added a two-yard scoring run in the third period. Cal Poly's other touchdown came on an interception return. Buck Buchanan Award candidate Jordan Beck returned a Humboldt State pass 36 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. It was Beck's third career score -- the other two came on fumble returns. Cal Poly amassed 612 yards of total offense while holding the visiting Lumberjacks to 236 yards. The Mustangs have beaten Humboldt State three straight times and eight in the last nine meetings. For the Lumberjacks, Lionel Arnold rushed for 45 yards and one touchdown -- a three-yard run in the final period -- while Daniel Nembhard added 47 yards on nine trips. Humboldt State quarterback Jason Baughman completed 16 of 33 passes for 156 yards, but was intercepted four times. Cal Poly plays its next two games on the road against Big Sky Conference opponents, facing Idaho State n Pocatello next Saturday and Montana State in Bozeman on Sept. 18. |
