Houston Baptist Eliminates NYIT, 6-3
May 27, 2011
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -
Chase Hernandez allowed three runs in nine complete innings, Kolby Arnst knocked in four runs, and Houston Baptist advances with a 6-3 victory over NYIT on Friday in the 2011 Great West Conference Tournament played at North Dakota's Kraft Memorial Field.
HBU (21-39) will turn right around and play No. 7 seed North Dakota with a championship spot on the line at 5:40 p.m. tonight.
On a rain-slicked field, the Huskies jumped on the Bears early with a three-run first inning off starter J.C. Costa (0-3).
NYIT (20-31) rallied right back in the next half-inning with two runs before HBU plated one more in the bottom half, making it a 4-2 ball game.
After a scoreless third for both teams, Dan Lackner singled in a run for the Bears - his third RBI of the game - trimming the Huskies advantage to 4-3. But like HBU did in the second, the Huskies responded behind a two-run double down the line by Arnst.
Costa lasted five solid innings, allowing six runs - five earned - on seven hits in the losing effort.
Hernandez improved to 4-5 on the season with a much-needed complete game effort for the Huskies. The righthanded hurler struck out seven while allowing 15 hits, but did a great job getting out of trouble all afternoon.
