NYIT eliminates Northern Colorado in Walk-Off Fashion
May 26, 2011
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -
NYIT's George Carroll delivered a two-run double down the left field line bringing in the winning run as the Bears eliminated Northern Colorado by a score of 4-3 in the bottom of the 10th in the 2011 Great West Conference Tournament played at North Dakota's Kraft Memorial Field.
No. 2 seed Northern Colorado (24-32) grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top half of the 10th after taking advantage of a throwing error on NYIT's third basemen Sebastian Grazziani. With two outs, Grazziani fielded a hard-hit grounder by Tony Crudo but overthrew the second basemen, allowing UNC's Casey Coy to score.
However, NYIT loaded the bases off reliever Brendan Hall (1-1) in the 10th with no outs. Then Carroll delivered the knock out punch by belting a double down the left field line, scoring Rob Cafiero and Effrey Valdez for the walk-off win.
Northern Colorado attacked first by taking a 1-0 lead in the top half of the third.
UNC increased their advantage to 2-0 in the sixth on a Coy RBI single.
Coy started on the mound and cruised thru the first six innings, allowing just two hits during that span.
NYIT finally got to Coy in the bottom of the seventh when Grazziani belted a two-run home run over the left field fence, knotting the game at 2-all.
Grazziani was a single short of the cycle with a 3-for-4 effort.
Coy recorded a career-high in strikeouts with six in eight innings of work.
With the win, NYIT (19-31) will square off against No. 3 seed Houston Baptist in an elimination game tomorrow at 11 a.m.
