Houston Baptist and NJIT Claim GWC Baseball Honors
May 23, 2011
NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Houston Baptist's Robbie Buller has been named Great West Conference Player of the Week while NJIT's Mark Leiter, Jr. has been honored as the Pitcher of the Week for their individual performances last week. The honors were announced Monday by the conference office.
Buller, a junior from Sugar Land, Texas, led HBU to a four-game series victory over GWC foe NYIT in which the Huskies won three out of the four games to finish as the No. 3 seed for this week's conference tournament while the Bears finished as the No. 4 seed. The designated hitter had much to do with that by batting at a .429 clip and a 1.286 slugging percentage. Buller also had three doubles, three home runs - two in one game - with eight runs knocked in. He also walked five times and scored six runs as he reached safely in 31 of the last 32 games. Buller tied HBU's single-season HR record with 15 for season and is now fourth on HBU's all-time home run list with 25.
Leiter, Jr., a sophomore from Lanoka Harber, N.J., set a new NJIT Division I record with 14 strikeouts in seven innings of scoreless two-hit pitching. The righthanded hurler allowed just four total baserunners on two singles and two walks while posting at least one strikeout in each of his seven innings as he improved to 5-2. He retired the last six batters he faced, striking out five of them and notched at least two strikeouts in six of his seven innings.
Others nominated were Houston Baptist's Kyle Dickerson (RHP), NJIT's Matt Tomczyk (SS), North Dakota's Kris Kwak (2B) and Zach Ransom (LHP), Northern Colorado's Ben Packard (1B) and Utah Valley's Austin Heaps (1B) and Jeremy Gendlek (RHP).
