GWC Baseball Tournament Bracket Set After Regular Season Wraps Up Saturday
May 19, 2012
Three-time Great West Conference champion Utah Valley completed a perfect conference season Saturday and earned the top seed in next week's GWC Baseball Tournament. The two-time defending GWC Tournament champion Wolverines will host the 2012 Tournament at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem, Utah.
The Wolverines moved to 28-0 in the conference with a 10-9 win over Northern Colorado in the final regular season game. It was an exciting end to the regular season as the GWC had four teams tied for second place and two tied for sixth entering Saturday's contests.
Texas-Pan American and NJIT got Saturday victories to tie for second-place in the conference standings. UTPA defeated Houston Baptist, 11-1, while NJIT claimed an 11-4 win over NYIT. Texas-Pan American will be the second seed in the upcoming tournament in the head-to-head tiebreaker with NJIT as the Broncs took three of four in the regular season series against the Highlanders.
NJIT will open the tournament as the No. 3 seed on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. (MT) against No. 6 seed North Dakota. The Broncs will put their No. 2 seed on the line against seventh-seeded Chicago State in the second game at 12:15 p.m. North Dakota and Chicago State played their final regular-season game Saturday against each other with both teams entering the contest in a tie for sixth, and the Fighting Sioux gained the sixth seed with a 20-8 victory over the Cougars.
The third game of the tournament will feature Northern Colorado and Houston Baptist which finished in a tie for fourth after each suffered Saturday losses. The Bears and the Huskies entered their final regular season games in the four-way tie for second with UTPA and NJIT, but the Huskies fell at Texas-Pan American and Northern Colorado lost at Utah Valley to drop them to a fourth-place tie. Northern Colorado will be the No. 4 seed after winning the tiebreaker with the Huskies. While the two teams split their regular-season series and both lost three games to runner-up NJIT, HBU split its series with runner-up Texas-Pan American while UNC won three of the four games against the Broncs which gave the Bears the fourth seed and the Huskies the No. 5 seed. The UNC-HBU game will be played at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Utah Valley will end the opening day of the tournament with a 7 p.m. matchup with No. 8 seed NYIT. The double-elimination tournament will continue through Saturday, May 26.
