UVU Wins Men's and Women's Cross Country Titles

THE BRONX, N.Y. - Utah Valley University won the Great West men's and women's cross country titles Saturday at storied Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. The meet was hosted by NJIT. The Wolverines tallied 25 points on the men's side with all five runners finishing in the top eight. Jacob Buhler led UVU with a time of 26:18.51 to finish in second place, followed by Joshua McCabe (4th, 26:30.22), Chase Englestead (5th, 26:36.74), Jason Lynch (6th, 26:37.58) and Trac Norris (8th, 26:48.70). Seattle University finished second in the men's team standings with 91 points, followed by South Dakota with 96 points and NJIT with 99. Texas-Pan American (116), Houston Baptist (127), North Dakota (152) and Chicago State (236) rounded out the field. NJIT's Christian Baumbach won the indivitual title with a time of 25:57.95. His teammate, Umar Saeed, finished third with a time of 26:26.48. On the women's side, UVU posted 21 points with all five runners placing in the top seven and led by Mary Nothum who won the meet with a time of 22:16.49. UVU's Karinne Bentley finished third with a time of 22:54.43, followed by Shelise Walker (4th, 22:56.39), Aleina Eisenhauer (6th, 23:10.38) and Brooke Hodson (7th, 23:18.31). North Dakota's Brittany Brenny finished second (22:30.99) and 2008 champion Ramsey Fitzsimmons of South Dakota finished fifth (23:03.73). Following UVU in the women's team standings were South Dakota (65 points), North Dakota (89), Seattle (105), Texas-Pan American (122), Houston Baptist (138), NJIT (225) and Chicago State (246). Commissioner Ed Grom was on hand to present team and runner-up awards, as well as individual honors. All-Conference first team honorees on the men's side were Baumbach, Buhler, Saeed, McCabe, Englestead, Lynch and North Dakota's Josh Lablanc (26:39.33). Second team honors went to Norris, UTPA's Angel Ramirez (26:49.50), 2008 champion Daniel Martinez from HBU (26:52.90), Seattle's Matthew McClement (26:53.49), HBU's Johnathan LeJeune (26:55.61), USD's Ethan Marquardt (26:55.62) and UVU's Seth Gutzwiller (27:04.08). Women's first team All-Conference accolades were bestowed upon Nothum, Brenny, Bentley, Walker, Eisenhauer, Fitzsimmons and Hodson. Second team recipients were UVU's Krystal Harper (23:24.89) and Angela Baker (23:39.44), UND's Katherine Enabnit (23:41.78), USD's Sigornie Pfefferle (23:45.82), UTPA's Judith Chumba (23:47.61), HBU's Raquel Tidwell (23:54.63) and UVU's Stephanie Christensen (24:02.69 ). Baumbach and Nothum garnered Athlete of the Year Awards, while Lynch and Hodson won Newcomer of the Year honors. Utah Valley's Scott Houle was named Coach of the Year for both the men and women by a vote of his peers.
