DAY 2 OF OUTDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP

Houston, Texas - The University of South Dakota men's track and field team remains in first place after Day 2 of the Great West Outdoor Championships, which are being held in Houston, Texas. The USD women's track and field team is second with one day of competition remaining.

The Coyote men are at 98.5 points after two days of competition, with Utah Valley trailing them at 76.5 points. The Coyote women are at 80 points and trail Utah Valley by 15 points heading into Saturday's final day of competition.

Men's Highlights Ben Walters captured his second Great West Outdoor Title with a win in the shot put. Walters had a throw of 16.56m. Walters won the hammer throw on Thursday.

USD's Tane Owens was crowned the Great West Outdoor Champion in the pole vault with an effort of 4.75 meters. Tony Arampatzis was tied for fourth at 4.5 meters, while Tim Rust was sixth at 4.35m.

Dylan Grau had a strong second-place finish in the javelin throw with an effort of 60.13m.

Caleb Peters was third in the men's decathlon at 5,475 points, with Rust placing fourth at 4,653 and Bryan Braley

In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Sean Fitzsimmons was third at 9:45.30, while Mark Hayden was fourth at 9:54.67.

In the long jump, Cody Linder was fourth at 7.02m, with Dusty Nowotny fifth at 6.87m.

Women's Highlights In the women's heptathlon, Crystal Schiernbeck was second at 4,360 points.

Amber Hegge was second in the long jump with an effort of 5.77 meters. USD's Allie Smith was sixth at 5.46m, while Tia Haines was seventh at 5.42m.

Schiernbeck was third in the javelin throw at 33.96, while Shara Thompson was fifth at 32.43.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Alexia Dunlop was fourth at 12:00.48, while Tianna Hurtado was sixth at 13:07.06.

Amy Velthoff was USD's top finisher in the shot put with an effort of 11.62 meters, placing her seventh.

The schedule for Saturday is listed below. The start of competition has been moved up to 3 p.m. because of inclement weather forecast for the Houston area.
