2009 WINTER/SPRING ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS ANNOUNCED

The Great West Conference has awarded Academic All-Conference honors since the league began with just football members in 2004, but in this first year as an all-sport league, those individuals who compete in league-sponsored sports are going to be added to the list, commissioner Ed Grom said as winter/spring sport honorees are released today. Student-athletes in the sports of basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, golf, women's tennis, baseball and softball are being announced. Leading the way on the 2009 Spring All-Academic Team are several all-Academic honorees who also captured major awards in their respective sport championships this year in the Great West. Utah Valley's Tiera Zaug was named Athlete of the Year in outdoor track and field and she also held a high GPA in Exercise Science; UTPA's Armen Kirakossian was medalist and was named Athlete of the Year at the 2009 Great West men's golf championship while maintaining a lofty GPA in Economics; and UTPA's Haley Hocott was medalist and was named Athlete of the Year at the 2009 Women's Golf Championship while having a 3.76 GPA in Criminal Justice. That was the case as Northern Colorado's Kevin Sandberg batted .500 with five home runs and 17 RBI to earn the Player honor. On the mound, Utah Valley's Justin Smith picked up the lone Wolverine victory for the weekend, a five-hitter, to earn Pitcher of the Week. (more)
