A veteran of the college ranks, Ed Grom is in his fourth year as Commissioner of the Great West Conference. He was appointed as the Commissioner in July of 2005 while also serving as Associate Commissioner of the Mid-Continent Conference (now named the Summit League). He resigned his position at the Summit in August 2008 when the Great West expanded to an all-sports league. Prior to his full-time commitment to the Great West, Grom enjoyed a little more than eight years as the Associate Commissioner at The Summit League. He joined the league office in November 1999 when in was known as the Mid-Continent Conference and focused his energies on compliance and championships. Grom shifted focus in day-to-day responsibilities in 2001 to that of managing the league's championships and television areas, as well as serving as a liaison to sport committees and league's officials groups. He authored the Mid-Con's Policy and Procedures Manual, and was formerly a member of the NCAA's Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet. When is left the Summit, Grom was a member of the NCAA Championships Cabinet and is on the list of NCAA peer reviewers. Grom came to The Summit League after serving in various roles in the athletic department at conference member UMKC for 12 years. He started out at UMKC in its sports information department and worked in that role for five years. He was then elevated to the position of Assistant Athletic Director, where he headed up efforts ranging from event management to compliance. He served as the school's Interim Athletic Director during the 1998-99 school year, and when he left the university, held the title of Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations. He chaired the league's Men's Basketball Committee while at UMKC, and was presented with the 1995 Athletic Department Service Award by UMKC. Grom joined the UMKC athletic staff after working for three years at the Big Eight (now Big 12) Conference office, where he was an assistant on the league's service bureau. He helped in the publicity of all men's and women's sports, served as a publications editor, and was an assistant media coordinator at the Big Eight men's basketball tournament. Grom graduated from the University of Kansas in 1984, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism. While at Kansas, he played on the Jayhawk golf squad, was the summer sports editor for the University Daily Kansan and worked as a stringer for the Wichita Eagle-Beacon. He began his collegiate career at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Ill. Grom, wife Karen, and sons Jake (16) and Jack (13) reside in Naperville, Ill. |
