June 20, 2013
NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Great West Conference has announced its 2012-13 Winter/Spring Academic All-Conference honors for the sports of baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, and women's golf.
Leading the honorees are five athletes who have achieved 4.0 grade point averages. Those individuals are Houston Baptist women's basketball player Devyn Weymouth, NJIT track athlete Jonathan Daudelin, North Dakota baseball player Trent Egan, Northern Colorado baseball player Ben Packard and Utah Valley track athlete Sally Hansen.
In all, 152 Great West Conference athletes were named to the team based on a minimum cumulative 3.2 grade point average. The athletes also must have participated in at least 50 percent of their respective team's contests. Using the institutions' most recent GPA, the student-athletes are selected by each member institution's sports information director, with approval from the faculty athletic representative and the head coach. First-year students and JC transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
"I applaud these Great West student-athletes who have made an effort to balance academics and athletics," GWC Commissioner Ed Grom said. "It is difficult enough to perform in the classroom with the outside influence of today's society, but these student-athletes have proven they can dedicate the hours and hours of time needed to also perform at the Division I level. I am truly amazed by those who have achieved all-conference honors while also maintaining the high GPA in their major of choice. Congratulations to all 152 honorees and best of luck in the future."
The winter and spring athletes join 108 fall-sport athletes who were named to the Great West Conference Academic All-Conference Team for the 2012-13 academic year, bringing the total to 260 Great West student-athletes who excelled in the classroom and were honored for their efforts.
