Cal Poly Adds Texas State to 2004 Football Schedule
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Texas State of the Southland Conference has been added to Cal Poly's 2004 football schedule. Cal Poly interim director of athletics Alison Cone made the announcement Monday. The Bobcats, who finished 4-8 a year ago and 1-4 in conference games, replaces Saint Mary's on the Mustangs' 11-game schedule. The Gaels announced last week that they were dropping football. Cal Poly, a member of the newly former Great West Football Conference, will host Texas State on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 4 p.m. in Mustang Stadium. It will be the Mustangs' homecoming game. Texas State, located in San Marcos, TX, and formerly known as Southwest Texas State, has a new head coach in David Bailiff, a former Texas State player and assistant coach. He was defensive coordinator at Texas Christian the last three years. Cal Poly and Texas State will be meeting for the first time. The Mustang schedule features 10 games against Division I-AA opponents and one against Division II Humboldt State. Cal Poly had played a pair of Division I-A schools each of the last two seasons, but wonąt play one this fall. Cal Poly will play five of its 11 games in Mustang Stadium. In addition to the contest with Texas State, the Mustangs will host Humboldt State in the opener Sept. 4, followed by Northern Colorado on Sept. 25, UC Davis on Oct. 30 and South Dakota State on Nov. 13. The Texas State homecoming contest will kick off at 4 p.m.; all other Mustang home games will start at 6 p.m. The UC Davis contest will be the Hall of Fame Game. Cal Poly's six opponents on the road will be Idaho State (Pocatello, ID) on Sept. 11, Montana State (Bozeman, MT) on Sept. 18, Southern Utah (Cedar City, UT) on Oct. 9, North Dakota State (Fargo, ND) on Oct. 23, Eastern Washington (Cheney, WA) on Nov. 6 and Sacramento State (Sacramento, CA) on Nov. 20. The Mustangs will play four Big Sky schools next fall -- Idaho State, Montana State, Eastern Washington and Sacramento State -- all on the road. Three of Cal Poly's five conference games will be played in Mustang Stadium -- Northern Colorado, UC Davis and South Dakota State. The Mustangs will play conference games at Southern Utah and North Dakota State.
